The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered nationwide mock drills on May 7 to test civil defence readiness. This move comes in response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, including several tourists.
Why These Drills Matter
During a high-level meeting, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan met with top officials, including the DG of Civil Defence and the NDRF chief. The focus was on improving emergency responses. Additionally, chief secretaries from all states joined the meeting through video conferencing.
The mock drills will cover 244 districts and even extend to village levels. They are meant to prepare the country for new and complex threats.
Key Features of the May 7 Mock Drills
According to a letter from the Directorate General of Civil Defence, the following actions will be tested:
- Use of air-raid sirens
- Civilian training for emergencies
- Cleaning of bunkers and trenches
- Crash-blackout drills
- Evacuation exercises
- Camouflaging of key facilities
- Hotline tests with the Indian Air Force
- Checks on control room operations
Moreover, these steps aim to improve communication, coordination, and readiness at all levels of governance.
Response to the Pahalgam Terror Attack
The urgency behind these drills follows the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. It was one of the deadliest attacks in recent months. As a result, India has taken a tough stance.
For instance, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. It also stopped the water flow through the Chenab River. Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to punish the attackers and those behind the conspiracy.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, fearing retaliation, claimed that a military strike might happen soon. It even offered to join an independent probe. However, India has not accepted this offer.
India Stands Firm
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that India will give a befitting reply. Therefore, the mock drills, planned by the Ministry of Home Affairs, are seen as part of India’s larger security strategy.
These exercises show the country’s commitment to national safety and civil defence readiness.
