New Delhi: Residents of Delhi-NCR felt a strong earthquake this morning. According to the National Center for Seismology, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the national capital around 5:36 am.
According to the National Centre of Seismology, the epicentre was in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan. It originated just 5 km below the earth’s surface. Shallow earthquakes, originating five or ten km below the surface, tend to cause more damage than those originating deep below the surface.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation shortly after the earthquake, prompting citizens to remain calm and watchful. “ Stay alert and follow safety protocols. Let us be prepared for implicit foreshocks, ” he advised in a public statement. Exigency response brigades were stationed to assess the situation, and no significant damage or casualties have been reported therefore far.
Why an earthquake’s depth matters?
A quake’s destructive force depends not only on its strength, but also on location, distance from the epicentre and depth.
Quakes can strike near the surface or deep within the Earth. Most quakes occur at shallow depths, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Shallow quakes generally tend to be more damaging than deeper quakes. Seismic waves from deep quakes have to travel farther to the surface, losing energy along the way.
What to Do During an Earthquake
- Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Find shelter under sturdy furniture and stay put until the shaking stops.
- Stay Indoors: If you’re inside, avoid running outside during the quake.
- Move to Open Areas: If you’re outdoors, move to open areas away from buildings, trees, and power lines.
Impact
- The earthquake did not cause significant damage, but people reported shaking buildings, items falling from shelves, and general unease. Emergency services and authorities have stated there were no major casualties or damage.
- It served as a reminder for those living in seismic zones to be prepared for larger earthquakes.
