A 26-year-old woman from Lucknow shweta Singh was found dead at her marital home just six months after her wedding, triggering serious allegations of dowry harassment and mental torture by her family.
The woman, identified as Shweta Singh, was found hanging on Monday. Her family has accused her husband and in-laws of harassment linked to demands for a Scorpio car and cash. The case has now become a major talking point in Uttar Pradesh, with police arresting the husband and father-in-law for questioning.
Family Claims Dowry Demands Started on Wedding Day
According to Shweta’s father, Umesh Kumar Singh, the family had already spent beyond their financial capacity on the marriage. However, he alleged that during the vidaayi ceremony itself, the groom’s family demanded ₹10 lakh and a Scorpio SUV.
Shweta’s sisters, Komal and Jyoti, claimed their father folded his hands and pleaded with the groom’s family during the emotional moment. They alleged that Shweta’s husband, Bhupendra Singh, stayed silent and hurried her into the car without allowing her to properly say goodbye to her family.
Shweta Was Allegedly Mentally Harassed
The family further alleged that Shweta faced regular mental harassment after marriage. According to them, her mother-in-law and other relatives repeatedly taunted her over dowry demands. Her sister-in-law, who reportedly lives in Noida, was also accused of using abusive language against Shweta and her family. The family claimed these constant insults left Shweta emotionally disturbed.

Forced to Quit Job After Marriage
Before marriage, Shweta singh worked in the debit card department of HDFC Bank. Her family alleged that she was forced to leave her job after the marriage was fixed. They claimed she had initially been told she could return to work later, but the family allegedly wanted her to stay at home permanently. According to relatives, this issue became another reason for frequent arguments inside the house.
Family Says Shweta Was Kept Isolated
Shweta’s sister Komal claimed that the 26-year-old was not allowed to freely meet or speak to her family members. She alleged that Bhupendra closely monitored Shweta and often created arguments whenever she tried to visit her parents, especially her sick mother. According to the family, the accused wanted to isolate Shweta completely from her relatives and emotional support system.
Last Phone Calls Before Death
Police officials said Shweta had spoken to her father around two hours before news of her death emerged. She had also spoken to her sister nearly an hour earlier. The family said nothing unusual in her voice suggested she was under immediate distress at that moment. By the time relatives reached the house, Shweta Singh had already been taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police Arrest Husband and Father-in-Law
Lucknow Police have registered a case based on the family’s complaint. The family has called the incident a “pre-planned murder” linked to dowry demands.
Police have arrested Bhupendra Singh and his father, Kaushlendra Singh, and questioning is currently underway. The accused include Shweta’s husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and another female relative.
Charges Filed Under Dowry Laws
The accused have been booked under provisions related to dowry death and cruelty under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Meanwhile, the post-mortem report has confirmed that Shweta Singh died by hanging.
The investigation is still ongoing, and police are expected to examine phone records, witness statements and family allegations as part of the case.
