A new political controversy has emerged in Maharashtra with reports of an alleged “Operation Tiger” aimed at triggering a split in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT). The development comes at a time when several political parties across India are facing internal challenges and fears of defections.
For the past few days, Shiv Sena (UBT) has been closely monitoring its Lok Sabha MPs amid speculation that some leaders may switch allegiance to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The reports have sparked intense political debate and raised questions about the future of the opposition party in Maharashtra.
What Is Operation Tiger?
The term “Operation Tiger” has become the latest political buzzword in Maharashtra. According to reports, leaders from the Eknath Shinde faction believe that a group of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs could break away and form a separate faction.
The name carries symbolic significance because the tiger was the iconic symbol of the undivided Shiv Sena founded by Bal Thackeray. Political observers believe the phrase is being used to describe efforts to attract leaders from the rival camp.
Reports suggested that six MPs from Shiv Sena (UBT) could potentially form a separate group and later merge with the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde. However, these claims have not been officially confirmed.
Uddhav Thackeray Holds Meetings With MPs
Amid growing speculation, Uddhav Thackeray held a series of meetings with party MPs to assess the situation and maintain unity within the organization.
Several MPs attended the meetings either in person or through virtual participation. Senior party leaders have been actively engaging with elected representatives to prevent any possible rebellion. The meetings were seen as an attempt to reassure party members and counter rumors of an impending split.
Names Linked to Defection Rumours
Political circles have been discussing the possibility that several Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs could join a breakaway group. Various reports have named multiple MPs as potential members of the alleged faction.
However, no official announcement has been made by any of the MPs mentioned in the reports. Political analysts have cautioned against drawing conclusions until concrete evidence emerges. The uncertainty surrounding the issue has kept Maharashtra’s political landscape on edge.
Sanjay Patil Rejects Defection Claims
In a major development, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Patil publicly dismissed reports suggesting he was planning to join another political camp. Patil stated that he remained committed to his party and had no intention of switching sides. He also said he had not received any offer from any political leader or organization. His clarification is significant because any rebellion would require the support of a minimum number of MPs under anti-defection laws.
Sanjay Raut Launches Sharp Attack
Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut strongly criticized leaders allegedly involved in discussions about changing political camps. Addressing reporters in New Delhi, Raut warned that elected representatives who abandon the party could face public backlash. He argued that many leaders achieved their political success due to the support and legacy associated with Uddhav Thackeray and the Shiv Sena. Raut also claimed that attempts were being made to lure MPs away from the party.
Claims of Financial Inducements
Sanjay Raut alleged that some MPs were being offered large sums of money to switch sides. According to him, certain leaders had received promises of substantial financial benefits in exchange for joining another faction.
However, no independent evidence has been presented publicly to support these allegations, and the claims remain a subject of political dispute. The accusations have further intensified the political battle between rival camps in Maharashtra.
BJP Distances Itself From Operation Tiger
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has denied any involvement in the alleged Operation Tiger. Senior BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the party has no connection with the reports and is unaware of any such operation. The statement was viewed as an effort to distance the BJP from ongoing speculation surrounding possible defections.
Why Sanjay Patil’s Statement Matters
Political experts believe Patil’s denial may have weakened the chances of a successful rebellion. Under India’s anti-defection law, at least two-thirds of a parliamentary party must support a split to avoid disqualification. Shiv Sena (UBT) currently has nine Lok Sabha MPs, meaning at least six MPs would need to move together.
If even one MP refuses to join a breakaway group, the rebels may fail to reach the required number, making any split legally difficult
