Instagram, the social media platform owned by Meta, faced a major technical problem on Tuesday as thousands of users reported issues while using the app. According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, more than 4,700 complaints were recorded at the time reports started rising.
Most users said that Instagram direct messages (DMs) were not working properly, preventing them from contacting others privately. A screenshot shared on Downdetector showed a sudden spike in reports, confirming widespread disruption.
Users Face Problems With App, Server Connection, and Posting
Data from Downdetector indicated that the majority of complaints were related to the mobile app itself. Some users also experienced server connection errors and difficulties while posting or publishing content.
The outage map revealed that several major cities were affected, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington, and New York, where users struggled to access normal Instagram features.
Instagram normally allows people to interact through public posts by liking, commenting, and sharing content. However, many users rely heavily on private conversations through direct messages, which became the biggest issue during the outage.

Instagram DMs Not Working: Users React Online
As problems continued, frustrated users quickly turned to other social platforms to share their experiences.
One user wrote that Instagram was completely down, while another questioned whether the messaging issue was affecting everyone or just their account. Many people reported delayed messages or conversations suddenly stopping.
Several users complained that they were disconnected in the middle of ongoing chats. Some said they could not reply to messages at all, while others joked that the outage unexpectedly saved them from awkward conversations.
Many users also posted complaints directly on Downdetector, asking whether messages were loading slowly or failing completely.
Rumours Link Outage to Iran Conflict — No Confirmation Yet
During the disruption, some online users tried to connect the outage with the ongoing US-Iran tensions. Posts claiming that technological infrastructure was being targeted began circulating online.
However, these claims remain unverified, and there is currently no official evidence linking the outage to any geopolitical event.
Meta Yet to Issue Official Statement
So far, the platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg has not released an official explanation for the outage. Users continue to tag Instagram’s official accounts on X (formerly Twitter), requesting a fix.
Many reported seeing error messages such as “failed to load earlier messages” despite having a stable internet connection.
Until an official update is released, users are waiting for services to fully return to normal.
