Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty has described the marriage of interfaith couple Monalisa Bhosle and Farman Khan as the “real Kerala story,” highlighting the state’s values of secularism and personal freedom. The couple tied the knot at the Arumanoor Sri Nainaar Deva Temple in Thiruvananthapuram on March 11, drawing nationwide attention and strong reactions on social media.
Monalisa, popularly known as the “Mahakumbh Mela girl,” became famous after a viral video from Prayagraj last year. Her marriage to Khan has now sparked discussions about interfaith relationships, individual choice, and Kerala’s social environment.
Minister Praises Marriage as Symbol of Secular Values
Speaking after the wedding, Minister Sivankutty said the union reflects Kerala’s inclusive culture where people from different religions and backgrounds can live peacefully together.
He stated that the couple’s marriage represents harmony and freedom of choice, adding that Kerala continues to stand as an example of social unity. CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan also joined him in supporting the couple.
According to the minister, the event demonstrates how individuals are free to make personal decisions without fear or pressure.

Why the Couple Chose Kerala for Their Wedding
Monalisa arrived in Thiruvananthapuram with Farman Khan after reportedly facing pressure from her family regarding marriage decisions. She claimed that her father wanted her to marry someone else, which she did not accept.
Seeking protection, the couple approached Kerala Police. Authorities informed her family that she is an adult and legally allowed to choose her life partner.
Monalisa later said she felt safe and supported in Kerala. She explained that she and Khan had been in a relationship for about six months before deciding to marry.
Khan also shared that they chose Kerala because they admired the Nainaar Temple and appreciated the welcoming attitude of people in the state.
How Their Relationship Began
The couple revealed that they first met while working together during a film shoot. Their friendship gradually turned into a romantic relationship.
According to Khan, Monalisa was the first to propose marriage. He initially hesitated but later agreed after spending more time together and understanding their bond.
He described their six-month relationship as deeply meaningful, saying their connection felt much longer than the actual time they had known each other.
Social Media Reactions Pour In
News of the wedding quickly went viral online, leading to mixed reactions from social media users and political figures.
CPI(M) leader Thomas Isaac supported Sivankutty’s remarks, calling Kerala a safe space for interfaith couples. He noted that the marriage took place at a temple associated with social reformer Sri Narayana Guru and praised the state for protecting personal freedoms.
However, not all reactions were supportive. Some users questioned whether the marriage could also serve as publicity for Monalisa’s upcoming film project. One social media comment suggested the possibility that the wedding might be linked to promotional activities, though no evidence has supported such claims.
Despite differing opinions, the story has generated widespread discussion across platforms.
From Mahakumbh Viral Star to Film Actress
Monalisa first gained public attention during last year’s Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj. A video showing her selling rudraksha beads and garlands became widely shared online because of her striking appearance and cheerful personality.
Her amber-coloured eyes and bright smile earned her the nickname “Mona Lisa,” making her an internet sensation almost overnight.
Following her viral fame, she received opportunities in the entertainment industry and is now preparing to enter Malayalam cinema.
Upcoming Film Career
Monalisa is set to make her debut in Malayalam films with director P. Binu Varghese’s upcoming movie Nagamma. She will appear alongside actor Kailash in the project.
Her transition from viral internet personality to film actor has attracted significant attention, with many viewers curious about her journey into cinema.
The recent wedding has further increased public interest in her personal and professional life.
Debate Around Interfaith Marriage and Personal Freedom
The marriage has also revived conversations about interfaith relationships in India. Supporters argue that adults should have the freedom to choose their partners regardless of religion or background.
Legal experts note that Indian law allows consenting adults to marry by choice, and authorities often step in only to ensure safety when disputes arise within families.
Kerala’s response in this case has been viewed by some as an example of institutional support for individual rights.
