Rajpal Yadav bail hearing was adjourned by the Delhi High Court, leaving the actor without immediate relief in the long-running cheque bounce case. During the hearing, Rajpal’s lawyer informed the court that the actor has already paid ₹2.5 crore and is willing to deposit more money if needed.
As a result, the court decided to hear the matter again next week.
Rajpal Yadav Bail Hearing: Lawyer Confirms Half Payment
After the court proceedings, Rajpal Yadav’s lawyer Bhaskar Upadhyay spoke to reporters. He said the actor had paid half of the original ₹5 crore loan taken for his film project.
Moreover, the lawyer argued that courts should not send people to jail in cheque bounce cases solely on the basis of undertakings. He added that the defence tried to meet Rajpal in jail on Thursday but could not do so. Therefore, the legal team plans to meet him personally and seek clear instructions before the next hearing.
How the Loan Amount Increased Over Time
According to the defence, the original loan amount rose sharply due to interest and penalties. Bhaskar Upadhyay explained that the ₹5 crore liability later increased to nearly ₹11 crore.
Meanwhile, he pointed out that ₹1 crore had already been deposited earlier with the court registry. In addition, the defence produced a cheque of ₹25 lakh during the latest Rajpal Yadav bail hearing. The lawyer also said the actor remains ready to deposit any financial assistance he receives to resolve the matter.
Why Rajpal Yadav Is in Jail
Earlier this month, Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him more time. The case dates back to 2010, when he borrowed ₹5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata.
However, the film failed at the box office, which led to heavy financial losses. Subsequently, a trial court convicted the actor in 2018 under the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced him to six months in jail. Later, a sessions court upheld the verdict in 2019.
Court Makes Strong Observations
During the latest Rajpal Yadav bail hearing, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma made strong remarks against the actor. She stated that Rajpal went to jail because he failed to honour his own repayment commitments, not because of any sudden court action.
Furthermore, the court noted that Rajpal had earlier entered into a settlement with the complainant but did not comply with it. Now, the court will decide the actor’s fate in the next hearing scheduled for February 16.
