A developer testing a smart contract on a private Ethereum fork expects their EVM wallet to recognize the network automatically. The Rabby wallet browser extension claims automatic network selection as a core feature, yet when you connect to a local Hardhat instance, a Ganache fork, or a custom testnet, the wallet either fails to detect the chain entirely or connects to the wrong network. The transaction simulation feature that Rabby wallet emphasizes as a security advantage becomes unreliable when the RPC endpoint is not officially recognized, and pre-sign risk alerts may not function against an unknown chain ID.

This disconnect between Rabby’s marketed simplicity and real-world testnet development is not a bug in the conventional sense. It is a design boundary that separates what Rabby wallet does well—fast switching among widely deployed EVM networks—from what it does not: supporting arbitrary, non-standard, or ephemeral chain configurations. Understanding where that boundary sits, and how to work within or around it, is essential for developers who need reliable transaction simulation and risk checking on custom networks.

Screenshot of Rabby wallet showing automatic EVM network detection interface with manual RPC configuration dialog

Why automatic chain detection relies on curated network lists

The Rabby wallet browser extension maintains an internal list of recognized Ethereum Virtual Machine networks, each identified by a chain ID, RPC endpoint, and metadata such as block explorer URL and native currency symbol. When a decentralized application requests a wallet connection through the Ethereum-compatible provider that Rabby injects into web pages, the wallet compares the chain ID in the request against its known list. If there is a match, automatic switching occurs seamlessly. If there is no match—a private fork, a staging environment, or a newly deployed testnet—Rabby cannot make an informed decision and either prompts the user to add the network manually or refuses the connection entirely.

This curation model prioritizes reliability and user safety. A public network list reduces the risk that a malicious website will trick users into connecting to a spoofed chain or fake RPC endpoint. By maintaining control over the default networks, Rabby can verify that RPC endpoints respond correctly, that block explorers are legitimate, and that users are unlikely to accidentally send funds to a wrong network. The trade-off is that any non-standard chain—including your local Hardhat instance, a Ganache fork of Ethereum mainnet, or a Polygon testnet variant—falls outside the wallet’s automatic recognition scope.

Developers who assume Rabby wallet will “just work” on any EVM chain often discover this limitation mid-test. They set up a local contract deployment environment, connect to localhost:8545 or a custom RPC URL, and find that the wallet either shows an unrecognized chain ID or tries to switch to a different network entirely. The automatic feature, which works flawlessly on Ethereum mainnet, Polygon, Arbitrum, or Optimism, becomes inert. This is not a flaw in Rabby’s security model; it is the intended consequence of preferring known networks over automatic acceptance of arbitrary endpoints.

How chain ID mismatches break transaction simulation

One of Rabby wallet’s key selling points is pre-sign transaction simulation and risk alerting. Before a user approves a transaction, Rabby attempts to execute it against the target chain, detect whether it would revert, identify unusual token transfers, and flag potential security issues. This feature requires accurate information about the network: the correct RPC endpoint, the current state of the blockchain, and valid chain metadata. On a testnet fork or private network that Rabby does not recognize, this simulation capability degrades severely.

When the wallet cannot match the chain ID to a known network, it cannot identify the correct RPC endpoint to query for the transaction preview. It may attempt to use a default endpoint, which would be incorrect for your private fork. The transaction might appear to simulate successfully against mainnet Ethereum when you intended to test on a fork with a different contract state. Alternatively, Rabby may refuse to simulate the transaction at all and display a warning that the chain is unrecognized. In either case, the security mechanism that makes Rabby wallet valuable—the ability to see what a transaction will actually do before signing—becomes unreliable.

Risk alerting also depends on chain metadata. If Rabby does not know that a token at address 0x123… is a legitimate stablecoin on your testnet fork, it may incorrectly flag transfers as suspicious, or it may fail to flag genuine phishing attempts because it lacks the token data for the non-standard chain. The wallet’s balance change preview, another advertised feature, may not function if the chain is unknown. These limitations are not independent failures; they cascade from a single root cause: the wallet’s detection system cannot map the chain ID you are testing on to a network in its curated list.

Manual RPC configuration: Step-by-step setup for private networks

Rabby provides a manual network addition feature specifically to address this limitation. To add a custom EVM chain to Rabby wallet, follow this procedure. First, open the wallet extension and navigate to the settings menu, usually accessed through the gear icon in the top-right corner. Look for a “Networks” or “Manage Networks” option. Some versions of Rabby present this under “Advanced Settings” or “Developer Settings.” If the option is not immediately visible, check whether you are on the latest version of the wallet downloaded from rabby wallet installation pages, as older releases may not include the network management interface.

Once you have located the network settings, select “Add Network” or “Add Custom Network.” You will see a form requesting several pieces of information. The chain ID is the first critical field. This must be an integer that matches the chain ID returned by the eth_chainId RPC method on your target network. If you are testing on Hardhat locally, the default chain ID is 31337. If you are using Ganache forking mainnet, the default is also 31337 unless you have explicitly configured a different value. Do not guess or use a placeholder; the chain ID must match exactly, or Rabby wallet will not recognize when your dapp is requesting a connection to this network.

Next, enter the RPC endpoint URL. This is the HTTP or HTTPS address your local or remote Ethereum node is listening on. For Hardhat running on your machine, this is typically http://localhost:8545. For Ganache, it is http://localhost:7545 by default, though this can be customized. If you are connecting to a remote testnet node or a staging environment, use the correct URL for that node. The RPC endpoint must be accessible from your browser; if it is not, transactions will fail silently or time out. Test the endpoint separately using curl or a tool like Postman before adding it to Rabby wallet, and verify that it responds to basic JSON-RPC calls such as eth_blockNumber or net_version.

The remaining fields are optional but useful: Network Name (e.g., “Local Hardhat,” “Ganache Fork,” “Staging Polygon”), Currency Symbol (e.g., “ETH” for Ethereum forks), and Block Explorer URL (if your private network has one). Some advanced versions of Rabby wallet may also ask for additional metadata such as the network icon or confirmation threshold. Leave these blank if you are uncertain; the wallet will still function without them. Once all required fields are completed, save the network. Rabby wallet will now recognize transactions and connection requests from this chain ID and will apply its transaction simulation and risk alerting features using the RPC endpoint you specified.

Testing and verifying manual configuration

After adding a custom network to Rabby wallet, verification is crucial. Open your local development environment—Hardhat, Ganache, Foundry, or your preferred EVM testnet setup—and confirm that it is running and responding to RPC calls. Then, create a simple test dapp or visit a dapp that supports manual network switching, and attempt to connect with Rabby wallet. The wallet should display a connection prompt specific to your custom chain, not a prompt to switch to a known network. If Rabby wallet automatically changes to Ethereum mainnet or another default network instead, the chain ID in your configuration does not match the chain ID your local node is broadcasting.

If the chain IDs do not match, debugging is straightforward. Query your local node directly to confirm the chain ID it is reporting. In a terminal, run: curl http://localhost:8545 -X POST -H “Content-Type: application/json” -d ‘{“jsonrpc”:”2.0″,”method”:”eth_chainId”,”params”:[],”id”:1}’. The response will be a hexadecimal number, e.g., “0x7a69” for 31337 in hex. Convert this to decimal and update your Rabby wallet configuration to match. Common pitfalls include forgetting to add the “0x” prefix in the RPC URL, using http instead of https when your node requires it, and using an outdated version of Rabby wallet that does not fully support custom networks.

Once the chain ID matches, test a simple transaction. Deploy a minimal contract on your local network and attempt to call a function through a web interface, allowing Rabby wallet to intercept the transaction. You should see the pre-sign simulation screen, balance change preview, and any risk alerts that Rabby can generate given the network metadata available. If simulation fails, check that the RPC endpoint in your manual configuration is the same endpoint your dapp is querying; mismatched RPC endpoints can cause simulation failures even if the chain ID is correct. If alerts do not appear, remember that Rabby’s risk detection relies on its knowledge of token contracts and common attack patterns; on a truly private network with custom contracts, the wallet may not have enough data to generate meaningful warnings.

When manual configuration is not enough: Working with testnet limits

There are scenarios where even careful manual RPC configuration cannot restore full Rabby wallet functionality. If your private network is truly ephemeral—spun up for a single test and then discarded—Rabby’s balance data and transaction history may not persist across sessions because the wallet caches state specific to known networks. Each time you restart your local node or redeploy contracts, the wallet may display stale balances or fail to fetch transaction status until the local data refreshes.

More fundamentally, Rabby wallet cannot provide meaningful risk alerts for contracts it has never seen before. An EVM wallet operates as a general-purpose tool; it cannot decode arbitrary smart contract functions or predict whether a call to an unknown address is benign or malicious without external data sources. On public networks, Rabby integrates with contract verification databases and token registries. On a private testnet fork, those data sources do not exist. You may see a transaction that says “Call unknown function at 0x789…” instead of “Mint 1000 USDC,” because the wallet has no way to decode the function signature without access to the contract ABI or to a registry of known contracts on that chain.

The practical solution is to use Rabby wallet for what it does best—connecting to your dapp and signing transactions—while accepting that advanced features like contract interaction analysis may be limited. For detailed transaction simulation and risk analysis on private networks, consider using specialized testing tools such as Hardhat’s built-in debug features, Foundry’s simulation capabilities, or OpenZeppelin tools for contract security analysis. Rabby wallet excels as a browser extension wallet for interacting with deployed smart contracts; it is less suitable as a development-phase debugging tool when the contracts and networks are not yet established or widely known.

Rabby wallet across browsers and mobile environments

The manual network configuration process described above applies to the Rabby browser extension on Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers. Firefox and Safari support for Rabby wallet is less complete, and manual network addition may follow a slightly different flow or be unavailable altogether. If you are testing on Firefox, verify that your version of Rabby wallet includes network management features; some older or platform-specific builds do not. The official download page and GitHub repository list supported platforms and any known limitations for each browser.

The Rabby mobile app for Android presents a different set of constraints. Mobile versions of EVM wallets typically have more restricted access to custom RPC endpoints because of network security policies on mobile operating systems and limitations on local network connectivity. If you are testing on a private network from a mobile device, you may need to tunnel your local RPC endpoint through a public-facing proxy, which introduces security considerations. Many developers reserve comprehensive testing with manual RPC configuration for desktop browser extension environments and use the mobile app primarily for interactions with well-known networks where automatic detection is reliable.

For Ethereum mainnet and other major networks, mobile and desktop performance is equivalent. But for testing on private forks or staging environments, the desktop Rabby wallet browser extension remains the more robust option. If you must test on mobile, consider deploying your testnet to a public or semi-public testnet service that Rabby can recognize automatically, rather than relying on a purely local network.

Integration with hardware wallets and MetaMask imports on custom networks

Rabby wallet supports hardware wallet connectivity through providers like Ledger and Trezor, and it can import existing MetaMask wallets. However, both of these features rely on accurate network configuration. If you import a MetaMask wallet into Rabby wallet and then try to connect to a custom testnet, Rabby will recognize the private key correctly but may not automatically switch to the custom network unless you have added it manually. Similarly, hardware wallet connections work only on networks that Rabby can identify; a Ledger device will sign a transaction on a private fork, but Rabby wallet will have difficulty confirming that the signature is valid if it does not understand the chain.

The recommended flow is to add your custom testnet network to Rabby wallet first, then connect your hardware wallet or import your existing wallet address. This ensures that all subsequent transactions are signed on the correct chain and that Rabby’s pre-sign verification can function. If you reverse the order—importing a wallet and then adding a network—you may encounter state inconsistencies where the wallet shows a different chain than the one your dapp is requesting.

Security implications of manual RPC configuration

Adding a custom RPC endpoint to Rabby wallet creates a trust relationship with that endpoint provider. The RPC server can observe all transaction requests you send, read your wallet address, and theoretically return false data to trick the wallet into signing an unintended transaction. When you are testing on your own local Hardhat or Ganache instance, this risk is minimal because you control the RPC server. But if you add a remote or third-party RPC endpoint to Rabby wallet—for example, a staging environment run by your development team—you are trusting that the operator will not manipulate transaction data or steal signing requests.

Best practice is to use localhost or controlled network endpoints for Rabby wallet testing. If you must use a remote RPC, verify its source, confirm that it uses HTTPS encryption, and consider whether a staging environment warrants the same security scrutiny as production. The wallet itself—Rabby—does not validate the integrity of RPC responses without additional tools, so malicious or misconfigured RPC servers can cause transaction failures or subtle silent errors. This is not a unique risk to Rabby wallet; all EVM wallets rely on the correctness and honesty of their configured RPC endpoints, as specified in Ethereum Improvement Proposals related to wallet provider standards.

Future-proofing your testnet setup with Rabby wallet

As you continue to develop and test on private networks, keep detailed notes on the RPC endpoints, chain IDs, and network configurations you add to Rabby wallet. If you frequently switch between multiple private forks or staging environments, consider creating separate Rabby wallet profiles or using version control for your network settings. Some developers export their Rabby wallet configuration as JSON and maintain it in their project repository, allowing team members to quickly add the same custom networks without manual re-entry.

Monitor Rabby wallet’s release notes and GitHub repository for updates that expand automatic network detection or improve custom network handling. The wallet is actively maintained and open-source, meaning that limitations you encounter today may be addressed in future releases. If you discover a consistent problem with private network detection, contributing a GitHub issue or a pull request can help improve the tool for other developers facing the same challenge.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Rabby wallet keep switching to the wrong network when I connect to my local Hardhat instance?

Rabby wallet’s automatic chain recognition matches your chain ID against its curated list of known networks. If your local Hardhat instance uses chain ID 31337 but Rabby is not configured with an RPC endpoint for that chain ID, the wallet cannot recognize the connection request and may default to Ethereum mainnet or prompt you to add the network manually. Add your local RPC endpoint (http://localhost:8545) to Rabby’s network settings with the correct chain ID to resolve this.

Does Rabby wallet support Bitcoin or Solana networks?

No. Rabby wallet is designed exclusively for Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains such as Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism. It does not natively support Bitcoin, Solana, or other non-EVM blockchains. If you need to test or interact with those networks, you must use a different wallet.

Will Rabby wallet’s transaction simulation and risk alerts work on my private testnet fork?

Transaction simulation will function if you configure the correct RPC endpoint in Rabby wallet’s network settings. However, risk alerts depend on Rabby’s knowledge of token contracts and security patterns. On a truly private testnet with custom or unverified contracts, alerts may be limited or unavailable because the wallet lacks data about unknown smart contracts. For comprehensive risk analysis on private networks, combine Rabby wallet with specialized development tools.

Can I use Rabby wallet with MetaMask wallet imports on a custom testnet?

Yes, you can import a MetaMask wallet into Rabby wallet and use it on a custom testnet, but you must first add the testnet network to Rabby’s settings with the correct chain ID and RPC endpoint. After the network is configured, Rabby wallet will recognize transactions on that chain and apply its security features to them.
