Nirmala Sitharaman Budget 2026: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, speaking at the Youth Dialogue on Union Budget 2026-27, highlighted India’s growing role in driving global economic growth and cited billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk to underline the point.
Addressing university students in Parliament, Sitharaman referred to a widely shared social media post by Musk that used International Monetary Fund (IMF) data to show the contribution of major economies to global GDP growth.
“Many of you are very active on social media, so you might have seen it. Elon Musk shared IMF data and reacted with surprise,” the Finance Minister said, recalling the post during her interaction with students.
India and China Driving Global Growth
Referring to the IMF figures highlighted in the graphic shared by Musk, Sitharaman said China accounts for 26% of global GDP growth, while India contributes 17%. Together, the two Asian economies make up around 43% of global economic growth.
“China contributes 26 per cent of global growth. India contributes 17 per cent. Together, 43 per cent of global GDP growth comes from these two economies,” she said, asking students what message such numbers convey about India’s rising influence.
Message to the Opposition
Touching upon the domestic political debate, the Finance Minister said India’s Opposition must acknowledge the country’s growing economic strength on the global stage.
“I will say this in Parliament as well, but the Opposition should also understand the kind of strength India has acquired now. We are next only to China. The gap may be large today, but we will bridge it,” Sitharaman added.
What Elon Musk Said
Earlier on Saturday, Elon Musk shared a chart based on IMF’s January 2026 projections, showing the top 10 contributors to global real GDP growth in 2026. Along with the chart, Musk wrote: “The balance of power is changing.”
The data showed:
- India contributing 17% to global growth
- China contributing around 26%
- United States contributing 9.9%
According to the chart, China and India together are expected to account for 43.6% of global GDP growth in 2026, highlighting a clear shift towards Asia.
Students Interaction and Budget Focus
The Finance Minister made these remarks while interacting with around 30 university students inside Parliament, who had observed the Union Budget 2026-27 proceedings from the Lok Sabha gallery. The discussion formed part of the Youth Dialogue, aimed at helping young citizens understand the government’s economic vision.
Earlier on Sunday, Nirmala Sitharaman presented her ninth consecutive Union Budget in the Lok Sabha, outlining major proposals for infrastructure development, sustainable tourism and youth-centric initiatives. She described the budget as a duty-driven roadmap designed to strengthen long-term growth while creating opportunities for the younger generation.
